Honeybee Newsletter:

February 2005

Hello from the Kinderhive,

February has been a very busy month for the Honeybees. The class rose to the challenge of learning new concepts and doing so many activities in such a short time. I am so proud of them! In this short month we continued to work on counting, sorting, measuring, etc. all of the "100 things collection" that was brought in for One Hundredth Day. In addition to these math activities, we continued with our math journals and we will finish February with an introduction to money. We also continue to work on many math concepts during our calendar time. Zero the Hero came to visit two times this month; and, as always, brought us some treats with a math twist to it. Zero the Hero brought his little friends from Zeroland to help celebrate our special day!

Valentine's Day

On February 14th we celebrated Valentine's Day. We decorated cookies for our Valentine's Party. We also decorated our boxes for our Valentine cards. The writing center has been a great hit. In this center the children are encouraged to write letters or make cards for others. All the children have made cards for each other and for family members. The center is visited every day, even on days when it is not part of our center rotation.

Psalm 23:2Our theme for the month has been friendship. We have read many stories on friendship and have had a lot of discussion on what friendship is and how we can show that friendship to others. In our daily devotions we have focused on how Jesus was a friend to others, and his many miracles which show his great love towards us. We always try to do a life application with each story to help develop their love for God and others.

We have also been learning Psalm 23, which has created many great discussions on how the Lord as our Shepherd cares, loves and guides us.

Groundhog Day

Another mini-unit that we studied during this month was Groundhog Day, which was an introduction to the study of shadows. Unfortunately, we had more cloudy and windy days than sunny, so we will continue our shadow activities when our days are sunny and calm. Presidents Day was an opportunity to do some Social Studies as we learned about what a president is and learned about two very famous presidents. During Rodeo Week we learned about cowboys and their role in Arizona. We will continue our study of Arizona next month. We ended our month with a "Rodeo Cookout."

ABC

We continue to work on reading concepts and everyone has made great strides in their understanding of our written language. Our goal in Kindergarten is to develop the desire to learn how to read. We try to do this by inspiring and fostering their eagerness to learn. Reading is a very involved task to master, so patience and consistency are very important when working with emergent readers. Thank you for working with your children over the weekend by reviewing the letter sounds. Research shows that "overlearning" the sounds is key in developing reading fluency. Keep up the good work!

Thank you for your support, help and prayers. It is such a pleasure to see each Honeybee mature and enjoy learning.

Love,

Mrs. Brinker & Ms. Lisa

Enrichment News

Creative Cooking: We've been cooking up a storm this month! The children made pancakes in the shape of the letters of their names; they got to eat the first try. They also had fun shaping pretzels and baking those. Another fun project was pizzas that we decorated with different fun items like tomato, cheese and pepperoni!

Spanish: The children really seem to be having fun with their Spanish. We reinforce the phrases and words we have learned with games and flash cards. They also enjoy hearing stories in Spanish and this helps them pick out the words they know and they try to comprehend the stories. Adios!

Puppetry in Literature: In Puppetry and Literature this month we really enjoyed ourselves! We read Clara the Cow and Fluff the Kitten. Both stories are from a book called The Funny Farm. We made cows and kittens using paper bags, toilet paper rolls, pipe cleaners, squiggly eyes and paint. The children had a blast taking turns putting on puppet shows for each other.

P.E.: Wow! P.E. has been a challenge, but it has also been loads of fun! We always start class with warmup stretching and 1 or 2 laps of running. We have incorporated many games to enrich the large motor skills. This past month we have played T-ball, croquet, dodgeball, soccer, and even Red Rover (a classic!) We have also done some fun relay games, and one of the favorites is running! Yes, just plain old running! It is great to see all of them growing, learning and improving their skills.

Art: In Art, we continue to explore color, shape and form. This month the children created a beautiful "Watercolor Surprise" using white glue and watercolors. Have you ever used masking tape and crayons to create "Masking Tape Magic"? Our last project was creating a "Photo Collage" using scraps of photographs cut into different shapes and sizes. The children really enjoyed working on their picture compositions, which were quite impressive. We are having a great time in Art. Thank you for sharing your children with me.

Music & Movement: We have been very busy this month exploring a range of music. One day we listened to many types of music. Then we discussed how the music made us feel ... happy, sad, playful, angry or joyful. With the same music we took paint and expressed the beat of the music with color and brush strokes. It was a very interesting class.

The last two weeks of music movement we have been learning to recognize different instruments' sounds and learning how to mimic beats and rhythms. It has taken some time, but we are learning to use instruments to communicate feeling and imitation. Our school had a special treat this month as well. We had Keri Sutter with Surgite visit our school and show us group movements to music about God's love. She chose this subject because for Valentine's Day we talked a lot about love and God’s love for us!
