Inconceivable! - July 29, 2005

Read 1 Corinthians 1:18-25.

Dear friends,

In the movie Princess Bride, there is a character throughout the story who utters the characteristic and amazed response, "Inconceivable!"

I think of that word when I read 1 Corinthians 1:18-25. Paul here is describing how God "made foolish the wisdom of the world," to "save those who believe" in Jesus Christ's atoning death and victorious resurrection.

For many in the Jewish worldview, a crucified Messiah seems like a contradiction in terms.

For many in the Greek mindset, God is distant and remote, only academic.

But a God who took on human skin, and even more amazing, human brokenness and failure could seem ridiculous and mind-boggling.

For those who have given their lives to this living Jesus, we say it is amazing grace that God would go to these extraordinary lengths to get past the barriers that separate us.

With God, and now through his Son Jesus, what is seen as inconceivable has now been conceived!
