Trust, Not Certainty - June 17, 2005

Read John 20:19-31.

Dear friends,

Flannery O'Connor, the gifted writer, once wrote, "When we get our spiritual house in order, we'll be dead. This goes on. You arrive at enough certainty to be able to make your way, but it is making it in darkness. Don't expect faith to clear things up for you. It is trust, not certainty."

In John 20:19-31, Jesus speaks to Thomas about believing instead of doubting, but then goes on to say, "blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed."

What makes faith, faith - is that it is not proven. It is a trust, which holds onto Jesus, even when we are in the darkness of our own doubts. It's true, faith may not clear everything up for you, but it will give you a way to hold on through dark times.
