Pastor's Corner Bit by a Boa - June 10, 2005 Read John 10. Dear friends, |

During the summers in New Jersey, while I was a student at seminary, I worked at a local pet store. When you work at a pet store, you develop a passion for not just liking animals, but working for them! One day I did a running-then-flying tackle of a little puppy who was making a break for it - running straight towards the railing off the second floor of the mall. Another day, while feeding the baby boas, I was a little careless and reached my hand too quickly into the tank of miniature constrictors, and one simply leaped up and bit my thumb, and hung on for dear life. I remember thinking very clearly and carefully as I considered the little snake hanging in the air from my thumb, that I should be careful in pulling the baby off my hand, because harming its teeth could be fatal in its future development. But then a second thought came to me: I didn't care! I pulled the snake off. My thumb (outside of four little red holes) and the snake were both fine. When I read how Jesus describes himself as our Good Shepherd (cf. John 10), it makes me smile to think of the care and attention I gave to the animals of that pet store; and how much more God must have a passion for caring for us - we who live life in his "little" flock. Today, try not to "bite" the hand of God, that is there to help you! God's blessings to you this day! Andy Ross
