Why God Likes Storks Better Than Ostriches! - May 13, 2005

Read Job 39, Zechariah 5, and Psalm 104.

Dear friends,

We have an ostrich ranch north of us. Weirdest thing ever. When you drive by on the freeway, there they are - running around or just standing by the fence, watching the cars go by. Sometimes I've been tempted to stop and purchase an ostrich for someone in my life - you know, as a token of my love and appreciation (and maybe twisted sense of humor).

In Job 39 we see in poetry that while the ostrich might have the speed to cause her to "laugh at horse and rider," she also simply lays her eggs in the warm sand, but then forgets about them, "unmindful that a foot may crush them."

Later, in the same strophe, we read, "The wings of the ostrich flap joyfully, but they cannot compare with the pinions and feathers of the stork."

What's so special about a stork? My friend, Vic Pentz, has pointed out that in Zechariah 5, we see that their wings are like that of angels. But it is in Psalm 104 where the stork is described as having its nest high up in the tall trees.

See? God likes storks better than ostriches mainly because they're better at caring for the little ones! They are committed to caring for those in their charge.

So, you might be fast like an ostrich - but it's key that you are committed to caring for others - like a stork.

God's blessings to you this day!
