Pastor's Corner Three Cheers for the Desert Tortoise! - April 29, 2005 Read 1 Kings 19. Dear friends, A camel can survive days without drinking water; longer if succulent plants are available. The desert tortoise can survive one entire year without drinking any water! The desert tortoise is one of the most amazing of God's creatures for how it can survive in harsh circumstances. How does it do it? |

The tortoise gets lots of sleep. The tortoise is able find nourishment in strange places. (Like getting minerals from sucking gravel!) The tortoise saves - saves and stores up water in its body. Elijah could have learned a lot from the desert tortoise. Read about his emotional crash after victory in 1 Kings 19. He goes from mountaintop highs to death valley lows - even wanting to kill himself - because he has not cared about the basics. Like getting some food and rest. Like storing up faith in God, for those moments you're not feeling "high." Feeling weak this week? Feeling tired and run down? Feeling like quitting and giving up? Remember the desert tortoise. Remember Elijah! God gives us what we need to get by. We just need to look for him, and be listening for his still, small voice. God's blessings to you this day! Andy Ross
