Listen to Him! - March 18, 2005

Read Mark 9:2-9.

Dear friends,

Perhaps you’ve seen this scene from the old comedy movie, The Man With Two Brains. Steve Martin plays a brain surgeon, Dr. Herfarrerer, who has fallen in love with an evil and conniving temptress. Standing before the portrait of his late wife, Martin asks for guidance. "Just show me a sign. Should I marry her or not? Please show me just a little sign."

Suddenly, a cold wind begins to blow, sending an icy chill throughout the room, and a voice wails in the wind, "Noooo, nooo, don't do it..." The wall splits in two, and the portrait spins eerily on the wall faster and faster, saying, "Nooo," while the furnishings crash and bang around the room. Then suddenly, everything becomes still and Steve Martin slowly picks himself up and says, "Since you won’t show me a sign, I guess it's okay to marry her." And goes off on his way.

In Mark 9:2-9, there is an amazing scene in which Jesus becomes gloriously transfigured and revealed to his close friends. They are confused about what to do, until God himself speaks from a cloud and says, "This is my Son, whom I love. Listen to him!"

Today, driving across town, I saw a banner strapped to a building that read, "God still speaks."

Hmm. Do you think that's a sign?
