A Definition That is True and Lasting! - March 11, 2005

Read Acts 2:22-32.

Dear friends,

Here are some daffy definitions for you to ponder today!

  • Coffee: a person who is coughed upon.
  • Flabbergasted: appalled over how much weight you've gained.
  • Abdicate: to give up all hope of ever having a flat stomach.
  • Balderdash: a rapidly receding hairline.
  • (and a personal favorite...) Frisbeeterianism: the belief that, when you die, your soul goes up on the roof and gets stuck there.

Have you ever wondered why so many Christians say the Apostles' Creed so routinely? Well - it's because its true. It's also because it's good to keep going over. It is a clear definition of who God is, who we are and what we can be and how we can live on a routine basis. Basically, it's a healthy habit to go over and over the truth of what we belief and how it shapes our lives.

Peter needs to be credited with being one of the first Christians to say in concise form what the gospel is. Check out his clear speech in Acts 2:22-32. He states clearly who Jesus is. He explains what happened to Jesus, and why. And he follows up with helpful guidance on what to do if you are convicted about Jesus in your own life.

Jaroslav Pelikan, the Yale scholar and historian, shares this African creed in his book, Credo:

"We believe that God made good his promise by sending his Son, Jesus Christ, a man in the flesh, a Jew by tribe, born poor in a little village, who left his home and was always on safari doing good, curing people by the power of God, teaching about God and man, showing that the meaning of religion is love. He was rejected by his people, tortured and nailed hands and feet to a cross, and died. He was buried in the grave, but the hyenas did not touch him, and on the third day, he rose from that grave. He ascended to the skies. He is the Lord."

What creeds do you know? Have you said them lately? Are you living them with boldness?

God's blessings to you this day!
