Sometimes the Most Important Thing to Do Is Nothing! - February 11, 2005

Read Luke 10:38-42.

Dear friends,

Sometime back there was an article on Mary Decker, the great track star. And the writer of the article commented on how this athlete behaved off the track; how there was a depth to her character and caring. At one point in the article, the journalist wrote, "She can sit all evening at the feet of a friend and not say anything, just smile and let the talk wash over her." (Kenny Moore, "She Runs and We Are Lifted," Sports Illustrated (December 26, 1983, p. 28)).

That reminds me of two women. The first is my wife. It's an attribute of the woman I married that both charms and challenges me - she absolutely enjoys just sitting and talking with others. Especially when her family comes for a visit. I'm energetic and ever prompting: wanna watch a movie? wanna go for a walk? wanna go out for ice cream? wanna play a game? And I get the usual response, "Let's just sit in here and 'visit'!” And I join them. And then, all over again, I am reminded of the wonderful joy of just relaxing and listening and "visiting."

Mary was Jesus' friend, and she also knew the value of doing nothing ... of visiting. She knew how important it was to have moments of just being with another, with the Savior. You can read about it in Luke 10:38-42.

Today - the world might expect you to be more like Martha; the world might expect you to get a lot of things done. But don't forget Mary. Don't forget to have moments of quiet, eye-closing, ear-opening, devotional moments of prayer and listening.

God's blessings to you this day!
